The Stewart Indian School served as a boarding school for Native American youth from four different states across the West and was operational for nearly a century. The site was closed as an educational facility in 1980 and was registered as a national Historic District in 1985. It is currently managed by the State of Nevada, and in addition to housing a number of administrative offices for the state, it offers a self-guided walking tour that shares the history of the school with visitors. The Stewart Indian School is also the site of the annual Stewart Father's Day Powwow. This is a multi-day event that draws a large number of visitors and alumni.
