Laughs, Music & More This Weekend in Carson City

It’s almost time to welcome those faraway loved ones home, to cook and fill up on family-recipe traditions, to warm up your home with a fire and a cup of cocoa. The holidays are nearly upon us.

The air has changed and the snow rolling is in, painting the surrounding Sierras a foggy white. In a matter of weeks, the new year will arrive.

Carson City’s embrace of this time of year never ceases to amaze. You might be looking for the perfect weekend in, out of the chill and cozied up with a movie and a homemade meal. But there’s still plenty happening around town, and plenty to perhaps convince you that this weekend may offer something right up your alley.

This Saturday, November 18, from 1 to 5 p.m., make way for another edition of the Carson City Beer Crawl. With 12 bars on the list, this is a massive event across downtown. For $15 you get a ticket and a souvenir beer mug, which you can take with you on your tour of nearly every bar in the downtown area. The first drink is free, followed by $1 refills at each stop. Even if the afternoon brings a cool breeze, there’s nothing like a little beer to warm you up as you walk through beautiful fall-turning-winter Carson City. And on top of that, a stamped ticket “passport” enters you to win a big screen TV! That’s something to cheers to.

As always, there’s something great happening at the Brewery Arts Center (BAC). This weekend you’ve got options.

The Black Box Theater welcomes In Stride on Saturday, November 18, at 7 p.m. The concert is only $5 and features quite the spectacle as the two band members strum mountain dulcimers (sort of a long, cello-shaped string instrument), guitars and mandolins, plus harmonicas and recorders as well. The multi-instrumentalists will cover a range of classic blues, jazz, folk, bluegrass and more – meaning you’ll find yourself singing, tapping or air-strumming along.

Psst! As a side note, if you leave such a concert feeling inspired to pick up a musical instrument yourself, head over to Play Your Own Music off of William Street. It’s a family-owned music shop with practically everything you need to start, whether it’s guitar, drums, keyboard or something else. No guarantees that you’ll be able to learn a song by Thanksgiving to entertain your house guests, but the shop does offer lessons as well!

Back to the BAC. Saturday evening has a unique, only-in-Northern-Nevada type of variety show you won’t want to miss either. The show’s called Nick & Bobby Act Weird for About an Hour. For just a $5 donation at the door, the two comedians will come onstage with the goal of entertaining you – whatever that might entail. It’s sketch comedy, stand up and a musical act all together, making for something you’ve surely never seen before and will probably leaving you rolling on the floor. These guys are acclaimed performers, regulars at Reno’s Pioneer Underground and back from touring across the United States on their own. It’ll be weird, fun and a perfect event to take those family members who flew in early for Thanksgiving.

So drink up, play along or sit back and enjoy whatever this weekend brings. It’s Carson City, after all, so you’ll be in great company. And if you do end up staying in and taking the weekend to yourself, no need to worry; there’s always something happening here.
