The beginning of a new year is an exciting time. Fresh off the hectic holiday season, you have all of 2018 to look forward to, and there are so many possibilities.

Of course the new year always arrives in the dead of winter, and Northern Nevada always has a few winter storms and gloomy days headed its way before spring arrives. But don’t let that discourage you from going out in Carson City and trying something new.

Whether it’s a resolution you’ve made for yourself, or it’s just a nagging feeling that’s been chasing you for months now, take the beginning of 2018 to do something you’ve never done before. Check out the town’s newest spots. Bundle up and head outside to experience winter in Northern Nevada in all its glory. Here are a few things coming up in 2018’s first weekend to get you started on something new.

For a fun, community-centric way to begin getting in shape, visit Carson City’s Well Being Massage & Functional Fitness this Saturday, January 6. The Tidal Wave class is bright and early at 8 a.m. and incorporates water rowing machines for a balanced posterior workout. That plus time with free weights and resistance bands makes for an effective exercise session. It’s a fun and healthy way to kick off the new year and get going on any weight loss or healthy lifestyle goals you may have set. It might just keep you coming back for more week after week!

On Saturday afternoon, Carson City Parks & Rec department invites you out to the Carson River for a 2-mile walk along the river. At 1 p.m. hikers will meet at Carson River Park and embark on this Winter Wonderland Walk, where the guides will discuss animal hibernation and migration habits, climate in the area and much more. Mainly, it’s a way to get outside and see the beautiful river area – quite a spectacle in the wintertime.

Perhaps this is the year you embrace a different kind of well being. On Saturday, January 6, Carson Psychic Institute is holding an all-day event devoted the psychic arts. That means healing demonstrations, classes on meditation and relaxation, complimentary rose readings and a great chance to meet the people of the institute. For those looking for peace of mind and a healthy disposition in the new year, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

After all that energy spent on physical and mental well being, maybe you'll just want to let loose this weekend. You’ve been to the cocktail bars and breweries in Carson City, but how about turning up to something at a faster pace? Visit Carson City’s newest lounge at Battle Born Social, the Sage Lounge. Each weekend night from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. is the Sage Project, the most upbeat party in town. The Sage Project has a dance floor, a DJ spinning dance music, a full bar and great company. If 2018 means stepping up your party game, the Sage Lounge is Carson City’s newest and most exciting spot.

Embrace the winter or escape the cold. Focus on self improvement this year and have a great time doing it. Whichever way you spend the first few weeks of the new year, I encourage you to try something you’ve never done before; 2018 may be the year you find your new favorite thing.
