Place names play a crucial role in shaping cultural identity, preserving history, and fostering a sense of belonging. In Nevada, a state with a rich tapestry of Indigenous heritage, mining history, and rapid urban development, the Nevada State Board on Geographic Names is tasked with the management of place names which presents unique challenges and opportunities. This lecture will highlight some case studies which explain toponymic management policies, illustrate collaborations, conflicts, and insights into managing place names in a way that respects history, promotes inclusivity, and reflects our increasingly diverse communities that call our state home.
