As you enter Carson City cruising downhill from the north on Interstate 580, the patches and slivers of green winding around the foothills to your right are a few of the challenging holes that highlight the front nine of Silver Oak Golf Club. This visual introduction should pique the interest of any golfer looking for a fun and challenging golf experience. A relatively short public 18-hole track, SOC plays to par 71 for men and 72 for women. With five sets of tees, players of all abilities will enjoy a good variety of holes that will test their course management skills.
The front nine features various degrees of elevation changes that reach a pinnacle with expansive views of Carson City on the 6th tee that is the shorter of two back-to-back par 3 holes. The backside winds through the Silver Oak residential community and features one of the most difficult par 4 holes in town. Playing slightly uphill, the wide open 13th fairway allows you to rip-it off the tee to minimize the difficulty of a long second shot to an elevated, wide and very shallow green protected in front by a large pond. A par here will make your golfing day truly memorable. In his first 18 months at Silver Oak, course superintendent Jim Wiggins has made many renovations and improvements to course conditions that have vastly enhanced playability.
Facilities include a driving range, putting green, chipping area, pro shop, snack bar and full 19th hole bar. Green fees are moderately priced with seasonal rates, specials, Acorn Benefit Card and Annual Passport Membership. Locals also enjoy a Sunday Men's Club, Tuesday Senior Men's Club, Thursday Women's Club and Friday Women Only Golf Social.
Nostalgia buffs of the 1950-'60s era will enjoy a look at the Executive Conference Center that features a collection of rare, museum-quality memorabilia and automobiles representing the longtime passion of owner-partner Garth Richards. The spacious Cadillac Room with private bar and outdoor patio seating is a perfect setting for tournament groups, weddings and banquets.
