Ribbon Cutting of New Downtown Art Sculpture Installation
Ribbon cutting of new downtown Art Sculpture Installation
On Friday, December 6, 2024, a new art sculpture will be added to Carson City’s public art collection, titled “Sense of Place” by artist Karen Yank, and is scheduled for installation at the South Carson St./South Stewart St. roundabout. Part of the inside lane of the roundabout will be coned off for the installation. Drivers, please stay alert and watch for work crews in the area.
A ribbon-cutting celebration is scheduled at the Chipotle parking lot near the roundabout from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited.
The sculpture is made of stainless and corten steel and measures 20 feet tall by 23 feet wide.
Notable symbolism in the artwork includes the Carson City Seated Liberty Silver Dollar—first minted in 1870, the Sierra Nevada, the capitol dome, a soaring golden eagle, and patterns derived from the Washoe Tribal Seal.
A cottonwood tree is also included, inspired by the iconic towering trees lining the Carson River and the West Side Historic District, and a representation of soundwaves and rhythmic beat, which, per the artist, symbolize “not only the evolution of communications of early reptiles and mammals that once inhabited this region but later the Native American population as well as embracing Carson City’s current community’s love of music.”
In her 2023 proposal for the sculpture, the artist stated, “The shift between the history of Carson City to its present state is a story filled with intersections between government, nature, and arts and culture—to mark the location of this unique history is to celebrate this enchanting community and its people only further.”
Additionally, Yank has a gallery showing at the Brewery Arts Center (449 W. King St.) of smaller freestanding and wall-mounted works through Friday, December 6. An artist reception is scheduled for Thursday, December 5, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with an artist talk at 6 p.m. This event is open to the public.
