November is finally here, and in honor of the month, today’s blog is brought to you by Thanksgiving’s favorite festive fowl, the turkey. First up is a fun little mix of turkey and wine because the Carson City Wine Walk is back again this month on the first Saturday of the month, November 7. The turkey part of this event comes by way of the November wine walk theme, which is Gobble Wobble (get it?), and there will be a prize for the best mask that conveys the turkey motif. If you’re interested in this event, be aware that there are some changes in place from what you may be familiar with. For example, you can only buy tickets online, there is a cap on how many tickets will be sold and you have to have made your purchase by noon on the day of the event. You’ll also need to have an appropriate health and safety mask on, pass a temperature check and sign a waiver in order to participate. But it’ll all be worth it because then you get to stroll through the downtown drinking wine, taking advantage of business specials and enjoying some fun entertainment. Then we go from a wine walk to a turkey trot. This year, Carson Valley’s annual road race goes virtual as the fun run returns to help support the Carson Valley Community Food Closet and the Douglas Animal Welfare Group. The way it works is that you register online and complete the run on your own any time between Thursday, November 12 and Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26. Your registration fee gets you a slew of goodies, such as a swag bag, a t-shirt, race bib and a medal, and you can pick it all up at the food closet. Registration and more information are available at the food closet website. Photo at right: Pixabay, Th G.
If you’re more of a hard-core runner who craves the thrill of in-person competition, don’t worry. Carson still has you covered with the Cold Turkey Run on Saturday, November 7. This one starts out at the Jacks Valley Elementary School and takes place on fire roads and trails in the area with 5K and 10K options. The Cold Turkey Run is the first of five trail runs that make up the Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series, developed and presented by Ascent Runs, a local race/running organization. More info on Ascent Runs and the other runs in the series is available online.
For those of us who like turkey but don’t care all that much for running (or walking, even when wine is involved), there’s yet another turkey-themed community event on the calendar for the month. Check out Turkey Bingo at the C.V.I.C. Hall in Minden on Saturday, November 21, where a BINGO can win you the main dish for your Thanksgiving dinner. The Kiwanis Club of Carson Valley hosts this annual event with the first session at 3 p.m. and the next at 6 p.m. There will be lots of food and drink available to purchase, and the fun continues until all the turkeys have been awarded. More information on the Turkey Bingo event is available by calling 775-339-8882. Photo at left: Pixabay, Samuele Schiro.
I imagine more turkey-themed community events will be popping up in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, so don’t be shy about spreading the word by letting us know about them in the comment section below.
