Pedaling into September in Downtown Carson City

By Bryan Akerley | Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Squeeze the last bit of fun from your Carson City summer.

The year is flying by, and we’re already facing the brisk breezes and changing leaves of fall 2017. But to those of you who live for summer, don’t worry; the temperatures haven’t dropped just yet!

September is quite the time here in Northern Nevada. If you haven’t already, I implore you to visit one of the area’s great farmers markets — I’d say it might be the best (and most fruitful!) time to go all summer. Make another short pilgrimage to Lake Tahoe before the snow comes (it’ll be here before you know it).

And, of course, take advantage of Downtown Carson City’s first revamped and renovated summer while the weather still allows it.

What’s that? You’ve already been to the new and classic bars and restaurants a million times this summer? Well, I can say for certain, you’ve never experienced it quite like this.

Inspired by bike commuters in Europe and the growing trend of multi-person party bikes across the United States, Reno native Kimberly Rose has now opened Pedal Pushers Group Cycle in Downtown Carson City.

Fans of Reno’s popular Brew Bike should know what it’s all about: Everyone mounts up on the mother of all tandem bicycles, a 15-person bus with a tabletop, an overhang for shade and each person’s very own set of pedals that keep the bike moving while a person in front steers. Add to that some loud music and lights, and you have yourself a party on wheels.

Like the Brew Bike, Pedal Pushers takes you — or rather, you take yourself — from spot to spot within the downtown area, stopping at each place to walk around and maybe grab a drink or snack before hopping back on the bike. Sound fun? This Saturday is Pedal Pusher’s inaugural ride, and it’s gonna be a blast.

It’s time to see Carson City from an all new vantage point, and there are many ways to enjoy the ride. For example, the Brewed Awakening pedal is a 9 a.m. excursion perfect for the coffee-loving early birds. It’ll take you along the west side’s Blue Line Tour, even stopping at the downtown farmers market on Saturdays or the Capital Building for a tour.

Or bike straight into Carson City nightlife with the After Sunset Shindig pedal. The path can alternate, but you can bet hotspots like The Union, Battle Born Social, Bella Fiore Wines and The Fox will be in rotation.

I’ve talked before about how all the best places in downtown Carson City are within walking (or biking) distance, but here’s the best part: You can customize your own tour. Three of your favorite stops and a time of day you prefer. That’s right — the best party in Carson City is yours to create and make your own. Personally, I’d love a late-afternoon ride around the historic west side homes ending at The Union for some appetizers, followed by a nightcap at Battle Born Social.

This Saturday, check out the ribbon-cutting rides offered by Pedal Pushers, then keep the party going with the monthly wine walk. If that’s not enough, stop by the family-friendly Carson City Street Fair happening in the Carson Nugget parking lot. Vendors, local craftspeople, food and live music are all waiting for you. Think of it like a summer’s end bash, or maybe a September kickoff — especially now that the month offers at least one great new experience to add to the ever-expanding downtown Carson City adventure.
